45 RPM: “The Octopus” by Angel & The Devines

The Octopus - Angel + The DevinesOh, Angel & The Devines, I’ve mentioned before that when I was a kid, there were a few songs that scared me just a little.  Or maybe more than just a little.  Now that I’ve got my hands on my old 45s, we’ll be hearing all of them at one point or another, and I’ll probably be losing some sleep.  Or maybe not.  Maybe I’ll just realize that all my childhood fears and unease were unfounded and just facets of undiagnosed anxiety issues.  Like this song, for instance.  This one didn’t outright scare me, it just gave me a giddy little shiver of unease every time I listened to it.  It was the first song I can remember making me feel anything other than happiness.  And it was confusing, because I loved it, but at the same time I was always a little scared to listen to it.  Yet I couldn’t NOT listen to it.

I’m sure you’re wondering how the hell a silly song about a silly dance could possibly scare anyone, Angel & The Devines, but just hear me out.  As soon as the song started, we hear what sounds like an octopus blowing bubbles.  A big, angry octopus.  And the whole song sounds like it’s being performed in a wet, dank, abandoned submarine.  And at the end, we hear that scary octopus again and the music slowly fades away.  From the first time I heard it, I always pictured you as this doomed band singing one last song as you were slowly dragged down into the black, heartless ocean by some gigantic beast made of nothing but tentacles and evil.

It didn’t help that the scene with the octopus in “Popeye” scared the ever-loving shit out of me.  I don’t know which I experienced first, the song or the movie, but I can tell you that “Popeye” was one of the first movies I ever saw at the movie theater, in nearby Slayton, back when they had a movie theater, and my parents were PISSED because I flipped my shit when that octopus showed up on the screen.  Pretty sure they threatened to never take me to another movie again.  I apparently don’t have good luck when it comes to going to the movies.

Thankfully, all of that is behind me now.  I can listen to your great song and enjoy it without having any nightmares whatsoever.  And I also faced my fears and went to YouTube and tracked down that octopus from “Popeye” that’s been haunting me for decades.  Turns out he’s kinda cute.  And super fake-looking.  Probably should have gotten out of the house more as a kid.
