Radio XXX, side B, track 2: “Just Because” by Anita Baker

Anita Baker - Just BecauseOh, Anita Baker, this particular track brought up a few topics, and I’m not even sure where to start.  First, as always, let’s get this out of the way:  the song is fabulous.  You’ve got an amazing voice, Anita Baker, and one of the reasons I loved my radio station so much is that it would play hard rock and rap and slow jams like this one, sometimes all back to back.  Like you sing in this song, my radio station was a precious gem to me.

But about this song.  I’m thinking that this song could only be sung by a woman to a man.  I can’t imagine a guy getting away with this.  Oh, sure, there are some great sentiments in this one, but as with all great songs, it really boils down to the chorus, and the chorus of this one is “I love you just because.”

Now, I don’t pretend to be a ladies’ man, Anita Baker, but I’ve dated a few in my day, and I was even able to convince one of them that it would be worth it to spend the rest of her life with me against her better judgement.  And I can guarantee that when a woman asks a man why she loves him, “just because” is not the answer she’s looking for.  In fact, I believe that that particular reply would get one’s TV-watching privileges revoked.  And when I say revoked, I don’t mean that you won’t get to watch TV, Anita Baker.  I mean that you’ll watch plenty of TV, and all of it will be on Bravo or TLC.  So maybe you love him “just because”, Anita Baker, but if my lovely bride asks me, I treat it like an essay question, because I don’t want to be forced to watch “Project Runway” or any of the “Real Housewives”.

But having said that, there was another part of this particular track that intrigued me, Anita Baker.  The DJ at the end of this song said, with some chagrin,  that your wedding dress cost $1500.  Well, Anita Baker, I’ve seen enough episodes of “Say Yes To The Dress” and “Say Yes To The Dress: Atlanta” to know that $1500 is a pretty reasonable price for a wedding dress.  And when I say reasonable, I really don’t mean reasonable, since it’s a dress that will only be worn once, and the whole concept of paying that much for a dress that will only be worn once makes me throw up in my mouth a little, but I say reasonable because as I said, I’ve watched more than my share of SYTTD (with my wife, to be very clear) and $1500 seems on the low end based on what the squealing denizens of those shows are shelling out for their special day.
But that’s neither her nor there, Anita Baker.  The bottom line is, this song’s great and I love it now like I loved it then.  I just won’t be adding it to any anniversary playlists for my wife and I. . .

“Just Because”
