Radio IV, side A, track 2: “No Simple Cure” by Baxter Robertson

Oh, Baxter Robertson, I could only describe you as pleasantly plaintive.  Your voice singing the chorus on this was like listening to a sensitive wolf howl in the desert.  I didn’t really pay attention to any of the other lyrics (and I think I may have butchered them as I try to transcribe them now), but at the time, I thought this was a deep song about the world in general and that there was no simple cure to all the ills of the world.  That was a pretty profound idea for a 12-year-old raised on sitcoms and Saturday morning cartoons where everything gets wrapped up by the end of the show.  Heck, even “Hunter” and “Riptide” got to the bottom of things after the hour was up.  Of course, like most songs, I think this was actually about a girl (and/or boy, I’m hip), but I still like to think this one was a rallying cry for those who would eventually become activists and/or all emo.

“No Simple Cure”

No simple cure, there is no simple cure
No simple cure, there is no simple cure

Once a happy creature of habit
Sleepwalkin’ through the house of young days
You come and cause a disruption, infect us and walk away
I found a pill could ease the hunger
Anything to get you out of my mind
So I put my money on a wise man
I should’ve known that he would reply

No simple cure, there is no simple cure
No simple cure, there is no simple cure
(there is no simple cure)

I tried a major operation, I put myself down under the knife
I tried payin’ off the generals, and little people that threaten my life

No simple cure, there is no simple cure
(there is no simple cure)
No simple cure, there is no simple cure
(there is no simple cure)

Gotta get there with a clear head
Be sharper than a steel head
Make me wait until I’m near death

You could hold your breath underwater
You can try hanging upside down
You can find yourself king on the mountain
All you hear is the lonely wind howl

No simple cure, there is no simple cure
(there is no simple cure)
No simple cure, there is no simple cure
(there is no simple cure)
No simple cure, there is no simple cure
(there is no simple cure)
No simple cure, there is no simple cure
(there is no simple cure)
