Radio XXXII, side B, track 3: “I’d Rather Go Blind” by Chicken Shack

Chicken Shack - I'd Rather Go BlindOh, Chicken Shack, I’ve got a lot of questions after listening to this song.  Firstly, how did you come up with the name Chicken Shack in the first place?  Don’t get me wrong, Chicken Shack, I respect the creative process and everything, but when I hear “Chicken Shack”, I’m picturing a rundown place at the side of the road that sells the tastiest chicken wings you’ve ever had.  Or maybe a whole chain of them made to look like rundown places at the side of the road.  Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, Chicken Shack.  Before I went vegetarian, I was a huge fan of Popeye’s, so I’ve got nothing against chicken places in general other than the whole larger moral issue of eating meat in the first place.  Which is most definitely not a post I’m up for writing about today.

Point is, Chicken Shack, when the DJ said that the name of the band was Chicken Shack, I kinda sorta giggled.  Of course, that was the last time I giggled while this one was playing, because there’s definitely no room for laughter with all the morosity going on in this song.  I shouldn’t have been surprised, since the DJ said that the name of this one was “I’d Rather Go Blind”; that’s not a statement that gets uttered lightly.  I just figured that with a name like Chicken Shack, you guys’d be churning out more light-hearted and zany fare.  The kind of stuff you’d expect to hear at a place called The Chicken Shack.

Also, maybe let’s chillax a little, Chicken Shack.  Maybe dial the hyperbole back just a notch.  You’d rather go blind than see your guy with another girl?  I personally don’t know anyone who’s blind, but methinks that if I did, and I asked them if not having sight versus having a guy leave you was a fair trade, I’m guessing they’d probably smack me.  Smack me hard.  Like Daredevil, The Man Without Fear type of smacking.

I get it, Chicken Shack.  Love hurts.  If it didn’t, the music industry would implode because there’d be a whole lot less to sing about.  But let’s keep things in perspective, ya know?  Maybe change it to something like “I’d rather drink a quart of milk I left in the car all day” (assuming you live somewhere hot and sunny.  It doesn’t count if it’s Minnesota in February because the milk would be cold and delicious) or “I’d rather watch ‘Girls’ with my grandparents”.

Just think about it, all right?  In the meantime, I’m going to run over to Popeye’s and watch other people eat chicken. . .

“I’d Rather Go Blind”

Somethin’ told me it was over

When I saw you and that girl talking

Something deep down in my soul said “Cry, girl”

When I saw you and that girl walking

I would rather
I would rather go blind, boy

Than ta see you walk away from me

So ya see
I love ya so much
I don’t wanna see ya leave me, baby

But most of all I don’t wanna be free

I was juuust
I was juuust
I was juuust sitting here thinking

About your kiss and your warm embrace

With the reflection in the glass that I held to my lips, baby

Revealed the tears that were rollin’ down my face

I would rather go blind, boy

Than ta see you walk away from me

So ya see I love ya so much
And I don’t wanna see ya leave me, baby

But most of all I don’t wanna be free

<awesome Chicken Shack jam>

Baby, baby, baby, I’d rather go blind
