Radio XXXII, side A, track 9: “Run To Paradise” by Choirboys

Choirboys - Run To ParadiseOh, Choirboys, just the other day I was chatting with some friends about this blog, and I was telling them what a wonderful marvel the internet is.  No, not because it connects people from all parts of the planet to one another.  Not because the mysteries of the universe are literally at your fingertips.  No, Choirboys, what makes the internet amazing is that I can learn who sang all my favorite songs as a kid.  Like this one, for instance.  I won’t lie, Choirboys.  I kinda forgot about this song until just about now, but as soon as I heard you singing “Run ta paradise”, I was like “Oh yeeeeah!  THIS one!”  But even though I remembered the song itself, I had no idea who sang it.

It was one of the pitfalls of taping off the radio and living in the dark ages before the internet.  If the DJ didn’t tell you who was singing the song, and if you couldn’t recognize the artist by their distinctive voices, you were outta luck.  You just had to wing it.  So for over two decades, this song sat patiently amongst the other great tracks of Radio XXXII, just waiting for me to listen to it again.  And I did.  And I had my moment of overwhelming nostalgia.  But still no idea who actually sang it.  Which is where the wonders of the internet come in, Choirboys.

This isn’t the only song on my tapes where I was flummoxed as to who sang it or what it was even called.  But whereas back in the day I just had to accept that maybe I’d never know who sang a song, now I can just type a few lyrics into Google and bam!  I get instant results, and those instant results are. . .Choirboys?!?!  I’m sorry to admit this to you, Choirboys, but I’d never heard of you.  Not even when this song was on the radio, because the one time I recorded it was the one time I ever heard it, and since the DJ wasn’t interrupting the music, this was a musical mystery.

Well, Choirboys, mystery solved.  And now I know who to thank for making such a great goddamn song.  Thanks, Choirboys.  This may be the only song I ever heard you sing, but it’s all I need to know that you rock.

“Run To Paradise”

Baby

You were always gonna be the one

You only ever did it just for fun

Butchoo run ta paradise

Jenny

I’ll meetchoo at the grocery store

You don’t need a friend when you can score

You run ta paradise

Uh

<awesome Choirboys jam>

Johnny

We were always best of friends

Stick together and defend

Butchoo run ta paradise

And Mama

Now donchoo worry ’bout me anymore

And I see ya cryin’ at the door

When I run ta paradise

That’s right, they had it all worked out
You were young and blonde and you could never do wrong

That’s right, they were so surprised
You opened their eyes up
(Opened their eyes up)
Opened their eyes uuuuuup

You don’t want anyone
(You don’t, you don’t, open your eyes up)
You don’t want anyone
(You don’t, you’re no fool)
Don’t tell me
This is paradise

(Open your eyes up)

You don’t want anyone
(You don’t, open your eyes up)
You don’t want anyone
(You don’t, you’re no fool)
Don’t tell me
This is paradise

Good times

Why’d I let ’em slip away

Why’d I let ’em slip away

I live in paradise

Run ta paradise

Run ta paradise

Run ta paradise

<awesome Choirboys jam>

Jesus says it’s gonna be all right
He’s gonna pat my back
So I can walk in the light
(That’s right)
You don’t mind if I abuse myself
So I can hold my head up
(Hold my head up)
Hold my head uuuuuuuup

You don’t want anyone
(You don’t, hold your head up)
You don’t want anyone
(You don’t, you’re no fool)
Don’t tell me
This is paradise

(Open your eyes up)
You don’t need anyone
(Open your eyes up)
You don’t need anyone

You’ll tell me
This is paradise

You don’t want anyone
You don’t want anyone

You’ll tell me
This is paradise
