Radio XXVIII, side B, track 10: “Got It Made” by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

Crosby Stills Nash and Young - Got It MadeOh, Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, let’s get this out of the way first:  this is a great song.  The harmonies, especially during the chorus, are beautiful, and every time I hear it I feel like I’m falling into a fluffy cloud of folk music.  But since you’re aging hippies, Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young, I’d like to take a minute to talk about hippies and “free spirits” because this song is putting out some vibes that I find pretty familiar.

As I’ve made clear before, I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’m not a hippy and don’t particularly find them endearing or even particularly likable.  But I know some people who would very much categorize themselves as hippies or free spirits or some other New Age-y category that would involve jewelry made from hemp and gluten-free diets.  And they are some of the meanest, craziest, most passive-aggressive people I’ve ever met.  They might talk about peace and love and no blood for oil, but don’t cut them off in traffic, my friends.  And don’t disagree with them about anything.  Because you’re either going to get a face-full of rage or you’re going to have a lifetime of cutting comments emitted from sweetly smiling faces.

This song is the perfect example, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.  Oh sure, you’re singing about how you’re glad that she’s got it made, but you are pissed as hell.  Because somewhere back in the day you “tried to set her soul free” as you call it, i.e. get her bra off, but she saw through that haze of patchouli and ended up with a guy who works for a living.  And here you are, still playing hacky sack and listening to, well, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.  And if she’d have just stayed with you, why, you’d have someone you could “borrow money” from to score some more weed.

Don’t get me wrong, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, I believe that there are true hippies out there who really don’t have a selfless bone in their body and really do believe in the peace and love they espouse and live their lives by that ideal.  But in my experience, most of the “hippies” I’ve met have self-esteem that’s in the crapper or are terrified of any negative emotion they might have or are just barely containing their rage, and their real feelings come out in clouds of passive-aggressive comments or condescending remarks.  In my experience, self-proclaimed hippies are like a weird version of Mr. Spock, half-hippy and half-human, constantly struggling to keep their true emotions at bay, stuffing them down with protests or passive-aggressive Facebook comments.

Whew, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young!  Clearly I’ve got some issues of my own, huh?   Well, we’ve got many songs and posts to go, so I’ll try working them out at a later date.  For now, let’s just sit back, relax, and enjoy this song.  I’m glad that you got this one made.  For reals.

“Got It Made”

<awesome Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young jam>

Know you are a friend’a mine

Babe, you been gone an awful long time

You might remember me

I tried to set your soul free
Glad that you got it made

When did you finalize your last trade
You are the only one

I’ve ever seen do what you done done (you are the only one)
Anything that you done done (you are the only one)
You are the only one, don’t put me under your guuuun

Gonna be missin’ you

Even though I understand that you’re not through

Go on, take it day by day
Seems like I lost you, anyway
Glad that you got it made

When did you finalize your last trade
You are the only one

That I’ve ever seen do what you done done (you are the only one)
Anything that you done done (you are the only one)
You are the only one, don’t put me under your guuuun

<awesome Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young jam>

When you came to save the world
I caused your dreams to fade

I couldn’t do what you did
And rained on your paraaade
Glad that you got it made

<awesome Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young jam>

Glad that you got it made
Haaard set of changes changes
For anyone that I know (glad that you got it made)

You’re gonna make it, make it, make it better for you and me and everyone else you know (glad that you got it made)

Just don’t forget me (glad that you got it made)
I’ll be there when you’re done

(Glad that you got it made)

And in the meantime, meantime, you’ll get to know
yourself so don’t judge anyone else
Anyone (glad that you got it made)

No noo

It doesn’t matter, I don’t mind
I know that you’ll remember sometime

Even if you never do
All you need to worry ’bout now is you
Glad that you got it made

When did you finalize your last trade
You are the only one
