Radio XXX, side B, track 8: “Heaven Help Me” by Deon Estus and George Michael

Deon Estus and George Michael - Heaven Help MeOh, Deon Estus and George Michael, besides being amazingly awesome, this song is a great example of one of the traps that a “romantic” song can ensnare us in.  At the beginning of this track, the DJ is talking about how you should call your honey right now and tell them that this song is for them.  And on the surface of things, it would make sense.  It’s George Michael, it’s got some saxophone, and it’s got some sexy singing, so yeah, it would be a perfect song for anyone’s honey, Deon Estus and George Michael.  As long as you’re prepared for your honey to then call you back after listening to it and be all like “Are we breaking up!?!?!  Is THIS how you’re breaking up with me?!?!?  With a song on the radio?!?!”

That’s when you take a glimpse at the actual lyrics and realize that beneath all that sexy breathy singing is a song about a painful break-up followed by a prayer to try to get over whoever you broke up with.  So no, Robin Jones (who I believe was the DJ at the time), I won’t be calling my wife in here to be like “Hey, I thought of you when I heard this song.”

It’s an honest mistake, Deon Estus and George Michael.  Back when my wife and I were planning our wedding and discussing what music we wanted when she came down the aisle, I was very much campaigning for “I Will Always Love You” by Whitney Houston, since it’s one of the best songs ever performed and had a title that said everything I needed anyone to know about how I felt about my soon-to-be wife.  But my then-fiancee set me straight pretty quickly, explaining that while the title could certainly be seen as romantic, if you listened to the actual song it was all about a sad and painful break-up and would likely send mixed messages to the wedding attendees.

So I get it, Deon Estus and George Michael.  Of course you would want a beautiful song like this to be about nothing but good things because it’s just so great.  But as I’ve learned since starting this blog, most of the songs I loved and thought I knew as a kid, I still love but I didn’t actually know anything about the content.  That’s all right, though, Deon Estus and George Michael.  There’s always time to learn new things.

And so I’ll leave you today not just with your great song, but with an added bonus, the song that we ended up playing when my wife walked down the aisle.  I won’t be watching/listening to it since every time I do, I burst into tears, just like I did on our wedding day, but I hope you enjoy it.
