Radio XLVII, side A, track 4: “Spirit” by Doug E. Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew

Doug E Fresh - SpiritOh, Doug E. Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew, you guys have probably noticed by now that I was taping these particular songs during a “Fast Rappin’ Weekend” where you could score yourself a copy of Young MC’s latest album, and all weekend long they were featuring the rap music.  As you can also probably tell, I don’t know that my radio station really knew what to do with the rap.  They featured it here and there, but almost all of it was either DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince or Tone Loc.  While I don’t know that I’d consider Tone Loc “sanitized”, him and Jazzy Jeff/Fresh Prince made pretty innocuous rap for us white folks.  I mean, I remember playing “Parents Just Don’t Understand” for my parents and freaking out in my head when I remembered The Fresh Prince said “I was scared as hell” at one point and being worried that my parents were going to get mad at me when they heard it.  They didn’t.  They also weren’t particularly impressed.  But I certainly knew better than to play anything I’d recorded by LL Cool J.

So anyway, here we were on a “Fast Rappin’ Weekend”, and so far the majority of rap music I’d heard was off of the “Ghostbusters II” soundtrack.  I don’t know a lot about rap, Doug E. Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew, but I feel like the “Ghostbusters II” soundtrack wasn’t a seminal rap album in the world of rap music.  Having said that, I friggin’ loved this song then and now.  My brother and I recorded “Ghostbusters II” off of Showtime, and we’ve both watched that movie umpteen times, and this song plays over the end credits and I’ve always thought it kicked all kinds of ass.  I’d heard rap music that was silly and funny and misogynistic and misogynistic and fun and misogynstic (did I mention misogynistic?), but this was the first one I’d heard that had that low, rumbling aggressiveness.  It’s one of those songs where when you’re rapping along to it you can’t help but flail your arms in the air and make fake gang signs and squinch your face up and say things like “Boy-eeee!”

I know, Doug E. Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew, I’m super white.  I get that.  I mean, most of my knowledge of rap comes from the “Ghostbusters II” soundtrack, so I’m very aware that I don’t have much street cred.  But come on, guys, let’s at least acknowledge that I had good taste in rap music, as limited as my knowledge was.

Also, just a side note, I just want to say how impressed I am that three different artists could make songs that revolved around the plot of “Ghostbusters II”.  That’s some talent right there.

Every resident and take a mother’s
Newborn baby and Dana’s the lady
To build an establishment
For an evil magician on a mission in the pitchin’ position and no condition
Will stop him on the transition of makin’ it in time
With the help of the slime
But somebody gotta draw the line
Who stand for all, who you gon’ call for the brawl
(Ghostbusters!)

But for them ta look down on us is a must

Here’s a seed so let’s plant a foundation’a newborn leaders
Law-book readers
Career coordinators and poverty feeders
Those that know me hear it and fear it
Know it’s the truth so they scared ta come near it
And you cheer it
As I share it
‘Cause it’s my spirit

As sho as I’m me and the skies’a blue
Ya spirit is the key ta unlock the true you
