Radio XXII, side B, track 3: “Hungry Eyes” by Eric Carmen, #31 on The Top 88 of ’88

Eric Carmen - Hungry EyesOh, Eric Carmen, let’s talk about hunger for a bit.  No, not the lustful kind that you’re singing about in your awesome song but just good old-fashioned tummy-rumblin’ hunger.  At the time this song came out, I had the metabolism of a god.  I could eat a whole pizza, a couple bags of generic potato chips (still the best chips out there), and wash it down with a pitcher of whole milk straight from the bulk tank, plus a couple cans of Elf cola (or sometimes Shasta or RC, whatever was on sale), and that was a meal.  ONE meal.  I’d have two or three like it every day.

As you know, Eric Carmen, I grew up on a dairy farm, and on a dairy farm there was always work to be done.  And to keep us from passing out, we’d also need to eat a lot.  Which meant breakfast, then a little lunch (what city folk would call a snack), then dinner (equals “lunch” for the big-city people), then some more lunch, then supper (i.e. dinner, ya city slicker), then probably another little bit of lunch.  So yeah, Eric Carmen, we ate a lot.  And one would think that with all this stuffing of the face that I’d have ended up weighing the same as one of our cows but you’d be wrong, Eric Carmen.  Because I was blessed with a teenage boy’s metabolism plus enforced exercise, so I was skinny as the proverbial beanpole and older relatives would joke about the hollow leg where all that food must be going to.

Well, Eric Carmen, times have changed.  I work at a desk job and saying my activity level is sedentary would be putting it mildly.  And that magical metabolism I was blessed with as a growing boy has gone the way of the cassette tape.  But the hunger remains.  And so now I look like an older version of myself were I one of the monsters in Dig-Dug as they’re being inflated; I would say I’ve got two more pumps before I burst.  I have become “Middle-Aged Man” from Saturday Night Live.  And to quote that classic character: “Are you lookin’ at my gut?!?!  I’m working on it!!!”

“Hungry Eyes”

I’ve been meanin’ ta tell you

I’ve got this feelin’ that won’t
Subside

I look at you and I
Fantasize

You’re mine tonight

Now I’ve
Got you in
My sights

With these
Hungry eyes

One look at you and I can’t disguise I’ve got
Hungry eyes

I feel the magic between you and I

I wanna hold you so hear
Me out

I wanna show you what love’s all about

Darlin’ tonight

Now I’ve
Got you in
My sights

With these
Hungry eyes

One look at you and I can’t disguise I’ve got
Hungry eyes

I feel the magic between you and I, I’ve got
Hungry eyes

Now I’ve got you
In my sights with those
Hungry eyes

Now did I take you
By surprise

I need you to see

This love was meant to be

<awesome Eric Carmen jam>

I’ve got
Hungry eyes

One look at you and I can’t disguise I’ve got
Hungry eyes

Did I take you
By surprise with my
Hungry eyes
