Radio XLIII, side B, track 1: “The Angel Song” by Great White

Great White - The Angel SongOh, Great White, I’m writing this on a Thursday night, and that’s when I recorded this song, according to the DJ.  I thought I remembered this song more than I did, if that even makes sense, and it wasn’t the song that I thought I remembered, but it’s still damn good.  And as I was listening to its unexpected beauty, I had this moment where I felt like time had stretched back to connect me to my younger self.  As I sat here, chin in my hand, eyes half-shut, feeling that kind of welcoming tiredness that you can only get from a combination of a surprisingly hectic week and the sudden appearance of winter, where you’ve only got to coast through one more day to get to the weekend, I felt this surge of kinship with myself.  I don’t exactly remember the moment when I first recorded this song or what time of year it was or what was going on in my life, but I feel pretty confident that I was very likely sitting in front of my stereo feeling the exact same thing I’m feeling now, one of those rare moments when it feels like life has decided to cut you some slack and give you a couple minutes to reset and recharge, and best of all, has supplied you with the perfect song to reflect your blessedly serene mood.  I wouldn’t have guessed it would be you supplying the soundtrack to such a feeling, Great White, but I’m glad you were here for me then and now.

“The Angel Song”

<awesome Great White jam>

Fallen angel
Ripped and bruised
Think on better days

Life is rude
Treats you bad
Tears yer wings away

Raise your eye
Ta star and sky
Believe and fly away
Take your dreams
Broken schemes
And sweeeep the past awaaaay

Fly
Lonely angel

High above these streets of fire

Fly
Lonely angel

Far away from mad desire

Hollywood ain’t
Paved with gold
It’s just a trick of light

Sunset falls
On stars of old
And blinds you with its light

A spider’s web
Of tangled lives
Lays streeetched across the hill

From distances
It’s glistening
Like El Dorado’s hall

Fly
Lonely angel

High above these streets of fire

Fly
Lonely angel

Leave behind the mad desire

<awesome Great White jam>

The dream was light
And fragrant nights
But how were you ta know

The streets are hard
They’re mean and scarred
Where only fools find gold

Fly
Lonely angel

High above these streets of fire

Fly
Lonely angeeel

Leave behind the mad desire

Fly
Lonely angel

Spreadjor wings
Another way

Fly
Lonely angeeeel
Find a better waaaay

A better daaaaaaay

<awesome Great White jam>
