Radio 59, side A, track 13: “Whatcha Gonna Do With My Lovin'” by Inner City

Inner City - Whatcha Gonna Do With My Lovin'Oh, Inner City, sorry, I don’t have much to say about this one.  I totally remember it, which is one of the things that amazes me about this blog, because I definitely haven’t listened to this one in 25 years, but I knew the chorus immediately.  And I forgot how much I liked the dreamy quality of this one.

I did notice one thing that stood out to me is when the DJ says at the beginning, “The Heat, take us with you or you’ll shiver forever.”  Which is really dire, don’t you think?  But that IS a pretty good way to sum up a Minnesota winter.  Having moved to Texas over a decade ago, I haven’t had to deal with real cold in awhile.  Even when the temperature occasionally dips into freezing temperatures here, I don’t take it seriously, like freezing temperatures here won’t cause frostbite or something just because I’m in Texas.

So I’ve gotten soft, Inner City.  And I’m not just talking about my waistline.  When it does dip into freezing temperatures, and I’m talking TECHNICALLY freezing, like the low 30s, I’m cold as hell.  And also ashamed.  Because 30 degrees ain’t nothin’ in the MN.  Anything above 0 is a blessing in the winter up dere.

I have mixed feelings about it, Inner City.  There are some things I miss about that kind of cold.  The world seems to just stand out more.  There’s a clarity in the frozen air.  Going out to feed the cows at 6 o’clock in the morning was gross, yes, but the stars stood out like blazing crystals in the early winter mornings.  And there’s something oddly pleasant about the way the skin on your face feels tight when you’re stumbling against a blast of arctic bluster.

But that’s just nostalgia talking, Inner City, and not the good kind where you get to remember songs like this.  It’s the kind where you forget about cold that sinks so deep into your bones that it feels like it’s invading your soul.  Where you forget how much it sucked as a kid with glasses constantly not being able to see because your lenses fogged up for hours at a time every time you came in from outside.  Or how much it suuuuuucks having to try to start your car at 7 in the morning when the temperature is minus 20 and you weep frozen tears because you’re tired and cold and there’s still 4 more months of this shit before the brief reprieve of spring and summer.

See what I mean, Inner City?  I’ve gotten soft.  But at the time I was recording this song off the radio, I didn’t think nothing of it.  But now that I’ve seen how the other half (of the country) lives, I don’t know that I could do it again.  I know my wife DEFINITELY couldn’t do it, so maybe I’ll just use her as an excuse.
