Radio 57, side A, track 11: “Anything I Want” by Kevin Paige

Kevin PaigeOh, Kevin Paige, oh no you din’t, girlfriend!  While I still enjoy your tunes now that I’m rediscovering them on this blog, I was kind of on the fence after your last song just because you seem like you might be a bit of a douche-nozzle.  And as I was listening to this one again for the first time in forever, I was enjoying it well enough, but again, you sounded a bit like an over-privileged tool whose parents got him some recording time in a studio to sing about how you can do anything you want.  And hey, if you can swing that, good for you.

But then we get to a part of the song where you complain about how you’re discriminated against because you’re white and people don’t believe that you can jam.  Is it possible to type a double take?  Because that’s what I just did.  As I was listening to it, I had to replay it, because I was thinking to myself, “Did he just. . .?  No. . .oh no, he did. . .”  Pump the brakes, Kevin Paige.  Pump.  The.  Brakes.

Look, dude, I think it’s great that you’ve got so much (over)confidence in yourself, and I would be the last one to deny that your music is terrific, because you’re definitely a talented guy.  And hey, maybe you really do feel like you’re discriminated against because you’re white, but you DON’T SING ABOUT IT!!!!  Your little diatribe about not getting enough props because of your Caucasian skin, that’s the kind of thing you talk about in a small group of people who you trust.  You don’t try to get it some airplay on the radio.  In the days of Facebook, you really can do and say anything you want, even if you really shouldn’t, but this was back when listening to bone-heads was blessedly limited to holiday dinners with the relatives instead of being part of your daily newsfeed, in which you have to figure out which friends and family you have to unfriend because you’ve just discovered they’re horrible people.  Save it for your Aryan newsletter, Kevin Paige.

Obviously I disagree with your sentiments on this one, Kevin Paige.  I hadn’t ever really thought about it until the last several years anyway, which speaks volumes right there, but being born a straight white male in America is pretty much like winning the Golden Ticket from Willy Wonka.  Most of the disadvantages I’ve had in my life have been of my own doing.  And growing up in a rural bubble, you don’t realize just how easy you’ve had it until you start talking to folks with more melanin or more estrogen or less appendages.  So easy that the only thing you really have to complain about is that someone thinks that you’re too white to jam.  Even though you’ve made an album that’s being broadcast nationwide. . .

So congratulations, Kevin Paige, whether you intended to or not, you created the national anthem for the white American man.  And as one of those guys, let me just say we could certainly do far worse.

“Anything I Want”

Anything I want

People always sayin’ whatchoo can and cannot do

Well, listen to me, people, I just do what I want to

I cannot justify a man with the power
To decide if and when I come down off my tower

(I knoooow) with the power from above

I can make it work for me when it comes ta push and shove

(I knoooow) from the talk upon the street

I can make a difference in
Who I meet
I can do
Anythiiiiing I want

I say you can’t stop me
From jammin’ on

I can do
Anythiiiiing I want

I say you can’t stop me
From jammin’ oooooon

Let it be

Anything I want

All my life I’ve always followed my dream

People think ya crazy for yo self esteem

I ain’t gonna sit down on my attitude and pout

I’m gonna be heard even if I have ta shout because

I can make it work fo me when it comes ta push and shove

(I knoooow) from the talk upon the street
