Radio XIV, side A, track 5: “It’s Money That Matters” by Randy Newman

Randy Newman It's Money That MattersOh, Randy Newman, long before you became the go-to singer/songwriter for every awesome Pixar movie ever made, you were just a guy who cranked out album after album and song after song.  I knew a few of your songs, peripherally.  I’d heard “Short People” but didn’t know it was you.  I LOVED “I Love L.A.” (until I saw the creepy Kardashian/OJ Simpson video), but again, didn’t know it was you.  But then, finally, thanks to the Hot New Music Hour, I suddenly had a name to that distinct voice.  What I appreciated about you, Randy Newman, is that you made it seem so effortless.  It seemed like you just plunked down at your piano and started singing about the first thing that popped into your head and it became a song, and it was always great.  Of course, genius like yours isn’t always appreciated, but you’ve gotta admit, Will Sasso did a helluva impression of you. . .

“It’s Money That Matters”

Of all’a the people

That I used ta know

Most never adjusted

To the great big world

I see ’em lurking in book stores

Workin’ for the public radio

Carryin’ their babies around
In a sack on their back
Movin’ careful and slow

It’s money that matters

Hear what I say

It’s money that matters

In the U.S.A.

All of these people

Are much brighter than I

In any fair system

They would flourish and thrive

But they barely survive

They eke out a living

They barely survive

When I was a young boy

Maybe thirteen

I took a hard look around me

And asked what does it mean

So I talked to my father
He didn’t know

I talked to my friend
He didn’t know

I talked to my brother
He didn’t know

Talked ta everybody that I knew

It’s money that matters

Now ya know that it’s true

It’s money that matters

Whatever you do

I talked to a man

Lived up on the county line

I was washin’ his car

With a friend of mine

He was a little fat guy

In a red jumpsuit

I said, “That looks kinda funny”

He said, “I know it does, too”

“But I got a great big house on the hill here

Great big blonde wife inside it

Great big pool in my backyard

Another great big pool beside it

Sonny, it’s money that matters

Hear what I say

It’s money that matters

In the U.S.A.”

It’s money that matters

Now ya know that it’s true

It’s money that matters

Whatever you do
