Radio XLV, side B, track 8: “C’est La Vie” by Robbie Nevil

Robbie Nevil - C'est La VieOh, Robbie Nevil, what the hell is your problem with having a paying job?  I was all set to wax poetic about how much I loved this song and how lucky I was to get it in its purest form, but then I listened to the lyrics, which I’d never really done before, besides “c’est la vie” that is, and right away, there you are complaining about working.  Just like in the very first song I recorded by you.  Seriously, Robbie Nevil, get over it.  You act like you’re the first guy who’s had to slog through a work day to get a paycheck.  Or who’s asked “Is this what life’s all about?”  Tres originale, Robbie Nevil.

My coworkers and I were discussing this just the other day at work, about how movie stars and pop stars and social media stars encourage everybody to follow their dreams.  And it’s a nice sentiment and all, Robbie Nevil, but no one really means it.  I mean, do you really want the guy who cleans your toilet to quit his day job of cleaning your toilet and pursue being a famous singer like you?  No.  You don’t.  Because then who’d clean your toilet?  Or serve you coffee?  Or take away your garbage?  Or vacuum the studio where you recorded this song?  That’s right, Robbie Nevil.  This world keeps running because schmoes like me weren’t quite bright enough or brave enough or talented enough or, the most likely, lucky enough to live out our dreams to the fullest.  Who work night and day and punch in and punch out and spend our paychecks on albums and movies and songs made by guys like you who complain about living the lives of guys like me.  Not cool, Robbie Nevil.

But the song’s great, and I’m not THAT bitter that no one’s writing blog posts about how awesome I am.  After all, that’s life, right, Robbie Nevil?
