Radio XXXIV, side B, track 6: “Just To See Her” by Smokey Robinson

Smokey Robinson - Just To See HerOh, Smokey Robinson, I had no idea until just now that this song was already two years old by the time I recorded it off the radio.  All these years, I thought this was one of the hot new releases of 1989 when it was actually one of the hot new releases of 1987.  I guess it doesn’t much matter at this point, except to highlight yet again how amazingly awesome my radio station was.  I’m pretty confident that most of the songs I recorded on Radio XXXIV were pretty much back to back, and I think we can all agree that with a mix of Warrant, Howard Jones, The Doobie Brothers, and yourself, Smokey Robinson, that that is a mix you’re not going to find on too many stations, then or now.

No surprise, I loved this song.  They should have called you Silky Robinson, Smokey Robinson, because that’s what your voice is.  It’s one of the things I’ve loved about revisiting all my old radio pals and listening to the myriad of different singing styles, from booming baritones that could be used as battering rams to your gossamer tones that are as delicate as a butterfly sneeze (assuming there is such a thing).  And I wouldn’t worry about if you’re going to see her again, Smokey Robinson.  Once she hears this song, she’ll be right back in your arms again.  But I think you already knew that.

“Just To See Her”

Just ta see her

Just ta touch her

Just ta hold her in my arms again
One more tiiime

If I could feel her waaarm embrace

See her smiiilin’ face

Can’t find anyone to take her place, I’ve got ta see her agaaain

I would do aaanything

I would go aaanywheeere

There’s nothin’ I wouldn’t doooo

Just ta see her agaaain

I can’t hide it

Nooo

I can’t fight it

Oh

It’s so hard ta live without the love
She gave to meeee

Doesn’t she know it

I tried hard not ta show it

Ooo

Can’t I make her realize that she
Really needs me agaaain

I would do aaanything

I would go aaaanywheeere

There’s nothin’ I wouldn’t doooo

Just ta see her agaaain (just ta see her agaaain)

She brightened up my every day

Made me feel so good in every way

If I could have her back ta stay (today)
I’ve got ta see her agaaain

<awesome Smokey Robinson jam>

Oooooooo

(Just ta see her)
I want to see her
(Just ta hold her)
Hold her, hold her, hold her
(Just ta see her)
Seeee heeer
(Just ta touch her)
Touch heeer

I would do aaanythiiing

I would go aaanywheeere

There’s nothin’ I wouldn’t doooo

Just ta see her agaaain (just ta see her agaaain)

She brightens up my every day

Makes me feel so good in eeevery way
If I could have her back ta stay (today)
I’ve got ta see her again (I’ve got ta see her agaaaain)

(Just ta see her)
It would, it would, it would
(Just ta see her)
Make me feel so good
(Just ta see her)
If I
If I could only see her agaaain
(Just ta see her agaaaain)
