Radio XXVII, side B, track 8: “Do You Love Me” by The Contours

The Contours - Do You Love MeOh, The Contours, talk about a blast from the past!  No, I don’t mean that this song was old even when I first recorded it twenty-something years ago, I mean that it’s been a long time since I first recorded it and wrote about it.  I can’t remember exactly what prompted me to record this one again, but I’m sure as soon as I heard that little guitar/ukulele or whatever it was at the beginning and heard that raspy-cool voice talking about getting his heart broke due to his lack of dancing ability, I was pretty powerless to resist pressing Play/Record.  You can’t not love this song, even if it wasn’t related to one of the best Patrick Swayze movies ever.  There’s just something infectious about the way you scream out “Do you love me?”, The Contours, and I may be reading too much into it, but I think that maybe you don’t really give a fig if she loves you now that you can dance.  At least I hope you don’t.  Because even if you never did learn to mash-potato or twist or whatever else you taught yourself to do on the dance floor, you had amazing voices, and she should have been satisfied with that.  But hey, maybe being able to dance is the one deal-breaker for her and everything else about her is perfect for you, The Contours, and if so, dance your way into her heart.  But to paraphrase a certain Johnny Castle, don’t ever let her put you into a corner, The Contours.  You’re way too good for that.

“Do You Love Me”

You broke my heart

‘Cause I couldn’t dance

You didn’t even
Want me around

And now I’m back
Ta let you know
I can really shake ‘em down

Do you love me?
(I can really move)
Do you love me?
(I’m in the groove)
Now,do you love me?
(Do you love me?)
Noooow that I can daaaance
(Daaaaance)
Watch me now
Hey!(work, work)
Oh, work it out, baby
(Work, work)
Well, you drivin’ me crazy
(Work, work)
With just a little bit’a soul now
(Work)
