Radio XLVI, side A, track 1: “20th Century Fox” by The Escape Club

20th Century Fox - The Escape ClubOh, The Escape Club, it’s sometimes scary how woefully ignorant I am.  I’m not talking about my lack of knowledge about world events or basic common sense, because that would be a REALLY scary conversation.  I’m talking about my lack of pop culture knowledge.  Up until a couple months ago, I thought that this song was an Escape Club original.  And then I happened to hear The Doors singing this somewhere on something.  Recently.  And I was like, “Oh. . .so The Escape Club didn’t come up with this then, huh?”  I didn’t say that out loud, of course, because I didn’t want to look like an idiot.  But I did just write it down in a music blog that could potentially be seen by way more people than would have heard me make that musical faux pas.  Like I said, common sense, nuh uh.

Anyway, The Escape Club, I always thought you guys were so clever.  20th Century Fox.  Like the movie studio.  But it’s really about a cute girl.  Who’s a fox.  And lives in the twentieth century.  That’s great, guys.  Except it wasn’t you, was it?  Still, even if you didn’t come up with the song, you did a fine job of remaking it.  And that’s high praise, since I’m not known for liking remakes.  But this one stays close to the original, yet still manages to accentuate your Escape Club-ness.

Embarrassingly enough, I should have known this whole time that you guys weren’t the originators of this song.  For one thing, my little brother, who has always had way better taste in music than me, was a huge Doors fan from a very young age, and I’m pretty sure that he had to have played this at some point or another.  Unfortunately, I was (and am) a self-centered asshole, so there’s no way I was going to listen to the same songs my baby brother listened to.  I mean, they were OLDIES!  Yuck!  (Seriously, The Escape Club, I’m a jerk.)  But even if you take away my disdain and lack of attention to my brother’s good musical judgment, if you listen to this track, at the very end the DJ calls this “an old Doors tune”.  So that fact was literally embedded on the song.  So yeah, The Escape Club, I’m both a self-centered asshole AND a straight-up moron.  My wife is a very lucky lady.
