Radio VII, side B, track 4: “Summer In The City” by The Lovin’ Spoonful

Oh, The Lovin’ Spoonful, your greatest hits tape was one of the first I ever purchased.  I actually hadn’t ever even heard of you, but your tape was $5.00 and within my budget of $5.00.  This was before I discovered the joys of taping songs off the radio, but I did discover the joy of listening to you, because I listened to that tape constantly.  You guys had a timeless sound and you sang really great songs like “Nashville Cats” and “Do You Believe In Magic?” and of course arguably your best song, this one right here.  This song could come out right now as a hot new hit, and it would sound brand new on the radio.  It defies its era, and it still perfectly captures what it’s like to be stuck in the middle of a city in a heat wave.  I could feel the stifling heat of the day and the blessed coolness of the night.

At the time, I experienced summer heat, but it was Minnesota heat, and yeah, it could get kinda sucky in the summer when you were stuck in a stiflingly hot hay loft unloading hay bales or walking down endless rows of beans picking weeds, but then I moved to Texas, where it gets too hot to move, much less do any kind of farm work, and then, The Lovin’ Spoonful, THEN I really got this song.  That piano pounding away sounds desperate, and now that I’ve sat in Texas traffic in July with the a/c not workin’, I understand that desperation all too well.  But having this song playing on the radio is some relief, because it’s awesome to hear a band that really understands what this sweaty guy is going through.

“Summer In The City”

Hot town, summer in the city
Back’a my neck gettin’ dirt and gritty
Been down, isn’t it a pity?
Doesn’t seem to be a shadow in the city
All around, people lookin’ half dead
Walkin’ on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head

But at night it’s a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come on, come on, and dance all night
Despite the heat it’ll be all right

And babe, don’t you know it’s a pity
The days can’t be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city

Cool town, evenin’ in the city
Dress so fine and lookin’ so pretty
Cool cat, lookin’ for a kitty
Gonna look in every corner of the city
‘Til I’m wheezin’ like a bus stop
Runnin’ up the stairs, gonna meet ya on the rooftop

But at night it’s a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come on, come on, and dance all night
Despite the heat, it’ll be all right

And babe, don’t you know it’s a pity
The days can’t be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city

<awesome guitar and piano solos, plus the sounds of the city>
