Radio IV, side B, track 11: “Cecilia” by Times Two

Oh, Times Two, I had no idea this was a remake, which is always embarrassing, because when you hear, let’s say, the original by Simon and Garfunkel, your response is “Hey, this is that song by Times Two!” which of course makes you look like a fool in front of anyone with any knowledge of music.

But let’s put that aside for a moment, Times Two.  Regardless of who sang this first, this song was always fascinating to me as a young lad because of the very first lyrics in the song.  So you’re making love to this girl in the afternoon (which, by the way, was pretty awesome, since it meant you either had skipped school or work to have sex with someone), but then you get up to wash your face and when you come back to bed someone’s taken your place.

Say what now?

This was a scenario I could not comprehend no matter how many different ways I looked at it.  I mean, I can’t imagine you took that long to wash your face, so who is this guy who was just waiting for you to get up so he could jump into bed with Cecilia.  And why isn’t Cecilia bothered by this?  And what exactly do you do when you come out of the bathroom and there’s some random dude laying in bed with your woman after you’ve only been gone for like two minutes?  Oh, Times Two, this song raised so many questions for me, and it made me realize that being an adult was going to be strange and complicated.

“Cecilia

Makin’ love in the afternoon with Cecilia
Up in my bedroom (makin’ love!)
I got up to wash my face
When I come back to bed
Someone’s taken my place

Cecilia, you’re breaking my heart
You’re shaking my confidence daily
Cecilia, I’m down on my knees
I’m begging you please to come home
Come home

Cecilia, won’t you let me make love to you?
Cecilia, don’t want no one taking my place
Cecilia, won’t you let me make love to you?
Cecilia don’t want no one taking my place

Whoa Cecilia
You’re breaking my heart
You’re shaking my confidence daily
Oh Cecilia, I’m down on my knees
I’m begging you please
To come home

Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa
Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa

Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa
Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa

Jubilation (jubilation)
She loves me again
I fall on the floor and I’m laughing <maniacal laughter>
Jubilation
She loves me again
I fall on the floor and I’m laughing

Cecilia, hey, baby won’t you let me make love to you?
Cecilia, don’t want no one taking my place
Cecilia, hey, baby won’t you let me make love to you?
Cecilia, don’t want no one taking my place

Hey!
Hey!
Hey!

Hey!
Hey!
Hey!

Cecilia, I’m down on my knees
I’m begging you please to come home,
Oh Cecilia, I’m down on my knees
I’m begging you please to come home
Cecilia, you’re breaking my heart
