Radio XXXVIII, side B, track 5: “Praying To A New God” by Wang Chung

Wang Chung - Praying To A New GodOh, Wang Chung, I wish I could live for just another thousand years.  That’s it.  All I’m asking for.  It’s not that I’m afraid to die, though I am, I just want to know what happens next.  It’s why I’m a sucker for comic books and soap operas and the end of the first “Back To The Future”.  I love the “to be continued. . .” part of life.  I want to see if there’s going to be a war over robot civil rights.  I want to see which near-future scenario I’ve seen in countless movies will become the real future.  Will it be “Firefly” or “Blade Runner” or maybe even “The Jetsons”?  What I’m really interested in is to see what religion looks like in the 31st century.  Will the old standards like Christianity and Judaism and Islam still hold sway?  Will Mormonism and Scientology still be a thing?  Most importantly, will there be Jedi temples and Vulcan rituals?

Seriously, Wang Chung, the Bible’s been translated into Klingon and I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that you can become an ordained Jedi priest, and considering we’re already adept at worshiping pop culture, it doesn’t seem like such a leap to believe that Jediism and Vulcanism will become legitimate forms of worship in the centuries to come.  What I’m REALLY interested to see is if the “Star Wars”, “Star Trek”, etc. universes become “real”.  Especially “Star Wars”.  After all, it happened a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.  A lot can happen in a thousand years, and if one of those things happens to be that people start trusting in the Force for realsies, that would be a very awesome thing indeed.  See you in a thousand years, Wang Chung!

All right!

What got inta you
Got inta me, too

What came over you is comin’ over me

I’ve had enough
Of all the old stuff
I saw the writin’ on the wall on my TV
It’s another second comin’
Like it or not
Yeah

Oh yeah

It’s another second comin’
Like it or not
Ya better start prayin’ to a
New gooood

Start prayin’, prayin’ to a new god
Start prayin’ to a neeew, neeew god
They’re sayin’ the devil’s got a new job
Start prayin’ to a neeeeeeew

A lotta Babel
Came down the cable
Everybody can be famous for a day

From shore ta shore
A big department store
Is all that’s left of the American way
It’s another second comin’
Like it or not
Yeah

Oh yeah

Well, it’s another second comin’
Like it or not
Ya better start prayin’ to a
New gooood

Start prayin’, prayin’ to a new god
Start prayin’ to a neeew, neeew god
Start prayin’, what are you afraid of
Start prayin’ to a neeeeeeew
There’s a biiig wooorld (big world)
In the street outside (in the street outside)
In their uniform (uniform)
Of pride (pride)

And they’ve aaall come

Ta see a star from the east (star from the east)
Is he man or beast

Decide (decide)

<awesome Wang Chung jam>

Feel like I’m crucified
Still I’m not satisfied
The second comin’
Is comin’ anyway

I see them pray for more
On every dance floor
I hear the wooord across the Milky Way
It’s another second comin’
Like it or not
Yeah

Oh yeah

It’s another second comin’
Like it or not
Ya better start prayin’ to a
New gooood

Start prayin’, prayin’ to a new god
Start prayin’ to a neeew, neeew god
Suc-cess and money’s what he’s made of
Start prayin’ to a neeeeeeew god

Start prayin’, prayin’ on the airwaves
Start prayin’ to a neeew, neeew god
Start prayin’, prayin’ on the freeway
Start prayin’ to a neeeeeeew god

Start prayin’, prayin’ at the back door
Start prayin’ to a neeew, neeew god
Start prayin’, prayin’ on the dance floor
