Radio XLVI, side A, track 2: “The Race” by Yello

Yello - The RaceOh, Yello, just as the last song we heard by you will forever be entwined with my memories of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”, so too will this song always be enmeshed with another movie I watched over and over and over again as a kid.  And that movie was “Opportunity Knocks”.  You may not have heard of that one, Yello (well, you guys did, probably, since your song’s in the movie), but I absolutely loved it as a kid.  To jog your memory, it was Dana Carvey’s first starring role where he played a con man who somehow cons his way into the corporate world and of course into the pretty girl’s heart (the pretty girl also happened to be the love interest on “Herman’s Head”, a TV show I still remember oh so fondly as well).  It was a pretty standard late ’80s/early ’90s comedy with a plot lifted directly from pretty much every other movie made at the time.  Like “Soul Man”.  Remember that one, Yello?

Anyway, this song was featured prominently in the movie and fit perfectly with the zany premise.  Of course, as with many of the things I fondly remember, when I revisit them, sometimes I become uncomfortably aware that maybe there was more going on than I realized.  Like, for instance, looking at clips of “Opportunity Knocks” now, I’m kinda like “Oh, so that was a teensy bit racist then, huh?”  Not like “Birth Of A Nation” racist, Yello, but I’m guessing anyone of any kind of Asian descent did not take kindly to Carvey’s several “impressions”.  And now that I’m listening to this song again, I realize that maybe it’s not so much zany as a cry for help or at least a frantic meditation on madness.  So yeah, another bucket of cold water dashed on my childhood memories.

No worries, though, Yello, I can still enjoy this song because whatever it’s about, it’s damn great.  Though I won’t be quoting “Opportunity Knocks” at the office anytime soon.  Unless I’m really wanting to find a reason to get me in the HR office, that is. . .

“The Race”

<awesome Yello jam>

Not any track is turning but The Race is in my head
I’m attacking the illusion but the stopping drives me mad

Another sun was shining and he knew he wasn’t great
He didn’t ever talk but he knew he couldn’t wait

Are you ever gonna push me let me run and let me do
I need it and I’m ready and I haven’t got a clue

Any track is turning but The Race is in my head
I’m attacking the illusion but the stopping drives me mad

<awesome Yello jam>

Gonna win The Race
