Radio 81, side A, track 3: “Message In A Bottle” by The Police

The Police - Message In A BottleOh, The Police, how great is this song, right?  I don’t have any specific memories of this one other than having always loved it, especially the concept of sending out that message in a bottle.  As a kid, I had a lot of pen pals, including some of my friends who only lived a few miles away.  Because as a kid, I couldn’t go anywhere unless my parents drove, what with me living on a farm and all.  So getting a letter was a big damn deal for me.  As I’m writing this, I can still hear the crunch of the gravel as I walked down the driveway to the mailbox to see what kind of awesomeness was in store for me.  Usually there wasn’t.  But as I got older, I started subscribing to magazines like National Geographic World and then, when I got my stereo, I started getting tapes from Columbia House.  Seeing our mailman coming down our dirt road was always the highlight of my day because of all the possibilities he would bring.

And it was just as exciting to put that flag up to let him know that I was sending something back out into the world.  A couple years ago, I got on a family tree kick after seeing my relatives at a gathering combined with a marathon of “Who Do You Think You Are?”, and besides realizing just how insanely big my family is, I also found that I now had everyone’s birthdays and addresses.  And one of my hobbies is making envelopes out of old calendars.  And so I started sending out homemade birthday cards and envelopes to all my family members.  Because as I get older, I realize that all I’m trying to do are the things I liked as a kid.  Like reading comic books and recording music off the radio.  And sending out messages in bottles in the hopes that I’ll get billions of them washed up on my own shore.
